Father’s day is less than a week away, and I am excited to show you a fun little project that you can make for that special guy in your life! It’s kinda a cross between a card and a scrapbook page… but more like 7-8 mini scrapbook pages.
There’s a quote about father’s that I love (and can relate to) is: “a father puts photos where his money used to be”. Or something like that… so, I wanted to create a wallet out of paper that was full of precious memories from this last year. A man’s wallet is much smaller than a woman’s, so I wanted to make something that would resemble an actual man’s wallet in size. You could use any paper…I thought that I’d want to make it look like leather, but instead I used paper that was printed with old map.
I took a 12×12 piece of ‘no limits’ (map) paper, cut 2” off the bottom (it’s now 12×10”) and folded it in half. It’s important to use a bone folder for all the folds. We need this to fold as flat as possible. Open the paper and fold the right and left side (12” side) into the center fold. Fold it over, so you will have a 3” x 10” strip. I folded over the top 2” (to create the flap) and then fold the bottom portion in half. (up to the bottom of the flap). Check out the photo so you can see where I cut to create the flap.
Open the card completely, and you will see the 8 areas created by all the folds. This is where I planned to add photos and journaling in each section. Because I wanted to keep the project as “low profile” as I could, I didn’t want to add more layers of paper, so I taped off a rectangular area of each section that I wanted to ink, paint and stamp. I used Walnut ink Distress ink, and Yellow Stained Glass by Tattered Angels, and turquoise acrylic paint. Once the sections were dry, I added stamping…I love to use texture stamps like words, and text, and of course arrows, and stars.
I printed out 7 photos from this last year… memorable moments, and events from this last year. It’s been a FULL year, and I love the way this project gives a happy look back through the year! I added a few flags, and flat embellishments. The washi tapes came in handy! (I love the pop of my Day Glow orange tape). I used more stamps, and labels and I LOVE how it turned out! I added some sewing detail, and touches of turquoise paint touched here and there.
The last detail was that I needed a closure to keep the wallet closed- I wished I had some Velcro on hand, but no luck. Instead a took a shipping tag, and put it through his typewriter and added that quote, “a dad puts pictures where his money used to be”. I folded the tag over and stitched the tag about ¼” from the fold, and adhered the tag in a position to tuck the flap behind the tag.
I had so much fun making this project… if you make something like it, I’d love to see your version! Share it on my facebook page!
