summer hair

Headband
sn’t it funny how it just seems like such a pain to actually do your hair in the summer? Maybe it’s the fact that you don’t really have to get ‘ready’ for the day, in case you end up in the pool, or just lounging around the house. I have been letting my hair grow out a bit, as I have a certain haircut in mind, and quincy is trying to grow her bangs out…which presents problems as well. I keep seeing all the cutie headbands out there, but without fail, I totally get a headache when I wear headbands, cause they are just too tight.
So, I decided to make my own-custom fit to my head! I have all these cute new ribbons that have just come out… at least I am hearing that people are starting to find them in stores… there are a whole bunch of different kinds, and so cute… on this little spool, that you could store on a dowel or something. I gotta rig something up for all of them! my favorite is the skinny dots, and the tulle… I used the strawberry colada ribbon to make these matching headbands for quincy and i… I even sewed on a couple mini-florals and a button in the center. all i did was measure my  head, and quincy’s and sewed a little piece of elastic between the 2 ends.  matching colors of elastic would be better. might need a little trip to joann’s.  I think I will make one in every color! So cute…easy to wear summer hair!
Headband2

RibbonI bought one just like it at j.crew for $26… man, I need to make a bunch and sell on ebay or something!
So I just have been cleaning up my studio- I stayed up late scrapbooking samples for my summer CHA catalog, and made a giant mess. I made 3 cute layouts, and this morning, when I was checking my email, and my sweet Capri baby pulled an entire cup of water all over all 3 layouts… they are toast.  Man, it put me in a bad mood this morning!
So, the clean studio is lifting my spirits… and I am back to re-creating the ruined sample pages. It’s fun to play with the new stuff coming out! I wish I could show… but not just yet!

    Hi Heidi-
    Love the headbands.
    Bummer about the layouts.
If I had a dollar for everytime I’ve spilt coffee all over my desk I’d be a rich woman.
(and yet I sit here with a coffee…living dangerously!)
Hope you have a great weekend
    Kelly

  2. Great idea for the headbands. Sorry about the ‘water” incident – ugh! Good think you’ve got a blog to write your frustrations. Doesn’t it help you feel better about things? Maybe you’ll even improve on the layouts the 2nd time around!

Yes, Heidi! Seen these ADORABLE ribbons in the store, and have bought a couple! What a great idea for people like me who love ribbon and tend to collect it. 🙂 I will DEFINITELY once again, have to copy you! 😉

    Heidi,
I love the head bands. We grew out my daughters bangs last summer, its hard! Summer is the perfect time to do it though. Bummer about the water! Where is the best place to find your products in Utah, or online? I never seem to get a good selection and then I see some on your site and wonder where or where they are? Utah should have a ton of them!

Hey their Heidi- CUTE HEADBANDS! Now if only I had a little girly to put them on… My boys wouldn’t go for that I’m sure!
What lens do you have on your canon? (Can you tell I’m itching for a new lens?)

Very cute hairbands Heidi! Sooooo sorry to hear about your layouts – been there, done that! They always look so sad though so you really can’t stay mad at them (at least not for long – lol!) Can’t wait to hear about the new stuff – I have TONS of Heidi Swapp all through my scrapbooks *grin*

ohmygosh you are just too cutsie for words! I have the same problems with headbands. That and they always slip and drive me nuts. So sorry about the layouts. The closest I’ve ever gotten to that is once I was doing my 2 year old’s Annual picture and left it out. He got to it with some of my decorative scissors and started cutting away. I was able to incorporate his “two years old and good at it” example into the layout, so it worked out for the best. But I was pretty ticked at first! 😉

Dang-it! So sorry about the ruined layouts. That would have put me in a bad mood too.
Loving the matching custom headbands. Wish I had a daughter for stuff like that. So fun! Will have to look at Scrapbooks Etc for your pretty new ribbon.

I’m still surprised that I found your blog, you’re like a celebrity. 😛 Anyway, way cute headbands. I’m growing my hair out as well & have the same issue with headbands. That looks like a sewing project even I could do, though I’d buy one if they were available. Your little girl’s birthday party looked so cute & I love that centerpiece idea.

Love the headbands and ribbon, they are awesome, hope to see some of them in a store soon!!

My wife loves to collect ribbon too. She bought a long thin dowel and had me put up three cup hooks to set it on. She puts her smaller ribbon rolls on that so whenever she needs some ribbon she jus goes to the roll she wants and pulls some off. For the bigger thicker ribbon we bought a circle base at walmart and I drilled a hole in the center for a bigger dowel and she just slides the ribbon onto that. Both ways came out really cool. How close are you to Turf Paradise? Thats where I used to ride for awhile.

Adorable…my girls (and I!) would love them as we all suffer from the headband-headache. Someone might have said this already: You wouldn’t need to get matching elastic if you center the flower over the elastic or nearby (the flower might not stay adhered as long if you glue it to the elastic…not sure)…and I don’t think it would matter to have the elastic not in the back of one’s head…

  20. Carly 1 June, 2007 at 10:39 am - Reply

As far as the elastic goes, you could always use clear elastic. It is generally right with the other elastics in the fabric stores. Love the idea!

when i make ribbon headbands, i fold the 2 ends of the ribon over a hair elastic and sew the folds over. (Hard to explain by typing!!) but it works pretty well. The elastics may not be as obvious as white elastic. yours are CUTE, though! i love the flowers!!

Love the headbands! .. On the elastic .. why not use colored markers to match the colors? (or would that rub off?) I do like the idea of using the small already covered hair elastics .. Although I don’t recommend it – since chemo earlier in the year .. I have that Mia Farrow look going for me right now .. I think this will be my favorite hair summer yet! … NO MAINTENANCE!… Although a cute headband might make a cute accessory for special occasions! (Oooohhh off to check out my stash of ribbon .. and I just received my CE Ribbon Swapp envelope yesterday!)

I wonder Heidi if you could send me one of your headbands to see if I could make them. My daughter always complains of the headbands being too tight or scratchy. Thanks 🙂

    Turned out cute, of course.
I just sewed some for my daughter & me earlier this week, so I laughed as I started reading this.
Mine are just plain.. Ribbons & Lace (on Main & Lindsay) has the best selection, & they have a wide elastic (in cute colors) that is being disc. by the manufacture. My daughter loves them! I am excited, because I have seen so many girls wearing these kinds of headbands, dressed up or dressed down!

Oooo I love the headbands. This would be a great project with my nieces! Thanks for the awesome idea.
Sorry to hear about the LO’s. I had that happen once with cappucino. I saved the LO actually! The background was originally a white one but turned a neat cappucino brown. Which was perfect. It matched the chatterbox chateau papers way better, LOL! Nice save huh.
Hopefully you get something figured out for them. Have a great day!!
