I have been SO excited to share with you all today how I am using the Storyline Memory Keeping program. This week a few of my fellow team members have shared their beautiful albums and I have been endlessly inspired. The ways to use these albums and kits are endless….no matter what stage, age, or topic you may find yourself in and wanting to document.
Right now, in my life I am currently a stay at home mom with a 3 year old toddler and a baby due in June. I know for a lot of other moms with children the same age as mine they LOVE the idea of memory keeping and scrapbooking but just often look at me through EXHAUSTED eyes and say “how DO you even have TIME or ENERGY for this?”. I hear them. I really do. More so than not, my tired and exhausted eyes are looking right back at them saying “I feel you. I’m with you. I AM YOU.”
It is SO true. The days are SO busy. Endless demands. The hamster wheel just keeps on spinning. But I am here to share with those of you who feel defeated by memory keeping and the idea of it that it IS possible to print those pictures and tell those stories. Our children are growing up, SO quickly. It is scary really to me how fast these past 3 years have even gone. I seriously cannot believe it. If I think too much about it I often get quite weak in the knees. How has this happened? I just don’t know. And the reality? Each day does not go by any slower. It is an endless battle.
However, life has an amazing way of answering just when we need it most. That is when I say…”hello Storyline…where have you BEEN all this time?”.
Storyline is that answer that all of us busy moms have been looking for. A doable, speed style way to capture our children’s memories using more than just a photo album. Yet, it is a simplistic system that does not overload our brains or homes with STUFF. (The piles…we all know those piles?!?). It is super cost friendly and for those of us who love to add those cute trendy touches…oh yes! It has that too. Seriously. Trust me on this. It is made for us busy moms!
Aside from the album options of choosing either an 8.5 x 11 D Ring or a 12 x 12 post bound in a variety of colours and themes, Storyline comes with 2 types of embellishment kits. One is the Deck of Days, the other a sticker Journaling Kit. That’s it. And really that is extra, don’t feel obligated if it does not suit your needs. All you need first and foremost is always just printed photos, an album and a pen. The heart of story telling and memory keeping.
If you do want to learn more, you can see all of the available themes and styles here…truly something for everybody!
Before I started my Storyline album, I had photos just sitting. Nothing printed just sitting. In computer files, on hard drives. Doing nothing. It always kind of bothered me because these were my precious memories and it’s like they were hiding away. But I just did not know what to do with all of my pictures, and there was NO way I could print them all. Plus it NEVER seemed like I had the time to get them printed! It frustrated me and the idea was just way too overwhelming. Plus once they were printed, how did I start? Where did I start? Ugh. More stuff to think about! As a mom, it also made me feel so much guilt that I was not doing more with these photos of my son. It seemed unfair to him.
When I learned of the Storyline system, and saw just how simplistic it was, I just knew that was the answer I was looking for!
My son is turning 3 on Saturday and the reality is I have a full year’s worth of photos sitting waiting for me to do something with them. So my little goal for myself was to create and complete his Year 2 album using Storyline. One spread for each month, capturing a “birds eye view” of favourite random photos from each month. With only a few photos to work with, and some journaling….I could DO this! I did not have to print everything, but just something that celebrated and documented his 2nd year.
So this is how I got started.
I chose to use the “Tell Your Story” 8.5 x 11 album. When you purchase this album it comes with all the page protectors you will need for 12 months, as well as the page inserts that you will adhere your photos and add your journaling too. No need to buy anything extra…it’s all here!
When you open the 8.5 x 11 albums they come with storage pockets perfect for the Deck of Days and Journaling Kits that you are working with. I am not the most organized person on the block so this really helps me keep my stuff together when I am quickly doing an entry here and there. No need to pull out a ton of stuff…or waste time looking for things! For moms with littles, we all know the minute we start pulling out stuff we have little curious eyes and fingers ALL over it. I think this is a great way to keep our stuff organized and discrete so that it does not end up all over the place and/or missing hehe ;).
How cute is this title page? Each album comes with one. I love this little detail.
Next up…. that lovely topic we all love BUT struggle with….the PHOTOS!
Here are some tips and tricks that I use that have worked for me in regards to photo organization and printing when it comes to lack of time as a busy mom:
- Create monthly photo folders on your computer. That way ONLY those photos from that month get added to that folder to avoid mixing up your pictures. It is so much easier to locate and print photos this way then just dumping them all in one place.
- Designate a set time, one day a month, where you sit down and dump off all the pictures from your devices. Your smart phone, digital cameras etc. That way you can see what you have on a more regular basis and it keeps your cameras fresh for the next month ahead!
- Invest in a wireless printer. This has been essential for me in printing off my photos quick. If there is something I want printed asap I can use my Selphy, ZINK or Instax printer to have it printed immediately. I love this option and it is very motivating since it does not take much time at all.
- Purchase an external hard drive. I had to learn this lesson the hard way…and unfortunately lost some precious memories. If you still cannot seem to get photos printed as often as you like, an external hard drive will save your memories for you till you are ready. It is so worth it.
When I began my album, I knew I was not going to print EVERY single picture to add into it. I mean…there are THOUSANDS! True story. So what I chose to do was print off 5 or 6 photos from the month that I just love. At the end of the day, I love them all so it’s not like I was leaving some out on purpose. The goal for me was to just get started. Print off those photos and put them in an album!
Once I printed my photos, I simply adhered them onto the album pages.
Next up, was to add a few embellishments.
Because well….I just love them. 😉 AND the Deck of Days makes it SUPER easy. They are all adhesive backed and cut. Just peel and stick!
Once that step was complete, time for a little story telling.
As you can see….nothing elaborate or time consuming involved. Just PRINTED photos and WRITTEN words. The heart of memory keeping.
As I began working more on my album, I started to have fun and add more variation to my pages. Again…nothing fancy, if anything probably ways to make it even work quicker for me such as adding Instax photos and full page photo spreads.
Have a look inside…
I know as life and time moves on I will constantly be having to adjust the way I memory keep and document. It is extremely important to me because at the end of the day this is all that we will have left of our children’s childhood. The memories in our minds and hearts will fade, as we experience new ones and as we age. The photos in the albums, the stories that we write down will always remain. To read and relive. To cherish again and again. For me, it is just a way to hit the press pause button. I remind myself daily that “the days are long, but the years are short” and I really do not want to forget this very busy and overwhelming yet blessed BLESSED time. Before I know it my children will be starting school, and becoming teenagers and graduating…and in a blink it just all happens so fast. I don’t want to look back and say to myself, “where did it all go?”. At least if I do, I can look to my albums and say to myself…”ahhh…there IT is” and open an album and for a moment be brought back to one of the most cherished times of my life. I guess this is WHY. Why with the exhausted and tired eyes, I do what I do.
